Barbie Godoy (1985) is a visual artist based in Southern California who works in a broad range of mediums. Using bold contrast and energetic lines, her original paintings evoke the surreal in the natural: a flaming desert sunset, the dark crags of a mountain.
Her mixed media and digital illustrations and prints draw not only from the second generation hippy culture of her youth, but her lifelong studies of art history. Vaulted lines recall the art deco buildings of Los Angeles. A carefully curated psychedelic color pallet radiates energy. References to mythological and archetypal characters abound.
Not limited to canvas, Barbie’s portfolio includes large scale, permanent murals. On the more ephemeral end of the spectrum is Barbie’s practice of the ancient art of henna, a form of body art that expresses the divine within.
Music is a big source of inspiration for Barbie. She collects vinyl records from the 60’s-00's and spins them at area venues. Barbie’s art adorns posters and flyers for local musicians and businesses. Festival goers around the Western region are familiar with Barbie’s distinctive live portraits, known as Portraits in Space, which she creates on site.
Barbie studied foundational practices at the Art Center in Pasadena and the Laguna College of Art and Design. Drawn to art from an early age, Barbie’s artistic journey has seen her train in a wide variety of crafts and artistic techniques, including ceramics, sewing, printmaking, storyboarding, character design, and watercolor painting.
Her clients have included Dreamworks and Google. Past events include henna artist at Spirit Weavers Gathering and Natural Expo West, as well as Portraits in Space at Desert Daze & Levitation music festivals.
